"Sawakaze" was commissioned in 1983 as the third ship of the Maritime Self-Defense Force's second-generation missile escort ship "Tachikaze" class. It introduced the latest integrated missile system of that time, the Tartar-D, allowing for the use of Standard Missiles (SM-1MR) and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. Serving as the flagship of the escort fleet, succeeding "Tachikaze" in 2007, the ship was operational until 2010.
