The Ukuru-class escort ships were designed as an improvement over the preceding Mikura-class escort ships, with a focus on reducing labor and shortening construction periods. Built between June 1944 and March 1945, a total of 20 ships were constructed. The class featured enhanced anti-submarine capabilities through the addition of increased anti-aircraft machine guns, 16 Type 3 depth charge projectors on both sides, and a stern depth charge rail.
