Nine Hateruma-class patrol boats have been built as base function-enhanced boats capable of acting as mother ships for helicopters and smaller patrol boats. Water-jet propulsion was adopted due to the high speed required (30 knots or more), and a bulwark was added to the bow to achieve excellent wave resistance. The funnel was also abolished to reduce the weight, and the exhaust was moved to the side. Its armament consists of a remote-controlled machine gun and a large water-discharge gun linked to an optical fire control system. PL-61 Hateruma was completed in March 2008, and is still in service today at the 11th Regional Coast Guard's Ishigaki headquarters.
This kit from Pit-Road can be built as a full-hull or waterline model; ship name and number decals are included for the Hateruma and her sister ship, the Shimokita. An in-scale helicopter plus two in-scale smaller ships are included.
