The Type 99 gets its name from the fact that this unit entered service with the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force in 1999! Even though it's 20 years old at this point, the Type 99 is still the latest self-propelled howitzer in Japanese service. Production continues to this day as the older Type 75's have yet to have all been replaced.
