The Tachikaze was commissioned in March 1976 as the first ship of the Tachikaze class, the second generation of missile destroyers of the Maritime Self-Defense Force. It was equipped with the Tartar D, the latest integrated missile system at that time, and could be equipped with standard missiles (SM-1MR). In 1998, the rear turret was removed and a new command center was built, and this ship became the flagship of the convoy fleet and operated until 2007.
