The light cruiser "Noshiro" was built in September 1941, just before the war started, as the second ship of the Agano class, and completed in June 1943, in the middle of the war. While other ships of the same type were built at the Sasebo Naval Arsenal, the Noshiro was built at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal. The previous class of the Agano type was the Kawauchi type, and there was an interval of 20 years between the Agano and the Kawauchi type, so the Agano became a ship with a modern aspect.
With a standard displacement of 6,652 tons and an overall length of 172 meters, the larger ship was equipped with three 15 cm twin guns and two newly developed 8 cm long twin high-angle guns as main guns.
Immediately after her completion, Noshiro became the flagship of the 2nd Mine Squadron and engaged in transport and escort operations in the Central Pacific.
In June 1944, she participated in the Battle of Mariana. Before and after this battle, her armament was reinforced, including additional equipment such as machine guns and some electric radars.
In October 1944, she accompanied the main forces of the Yamato and Musashi in Operation Sho Ichi I (Battle of Leyte). In an encounter with a U.S. escort carrier, she was hit by a direct hit and had to retreat, but was hit by lightning in an air attack and died in the battle.
